Interested in Writing for Us?
Our two key considerations are: (1) whether the topic will be of broad interest to a wide range of citizen planners (we have subscribers in all 50 states, in big cities, and in small towns); and (2) whether the writer has the ability to write in a clear, jargon-free, style that will be understandable to non-professionals. Of course, we also consider the writer's experience, whether the topic is one we've recently covered, and how the article "fits" with other articles we are planning to run. Articles generally run between 1500 and 3000 words, depending on the topic. We do provide modest compensation to authors, depending on the length of the article and the author's experience.
You can get a better feel for the types of topics we cover by browsing through our subject index, or using our category index, and reading excerpts from articles we've published. You can also see who has already written for the PCJ.
Simply email your article proposal to Wayne Senville, Editor of the Planning Commissioners Journal (editor@plannersweb.com). A two or three paragraph description will usually suffice as the first step. Also include information about your background and experience. If you have an article you've already written, feel free to email that to Wayne as a pdf file (and indicate whether the article has previously been published).
